RECORDS Nashville artist-songwriter George Birge is left hung up on the mystery of an all-time high in the stormy new power ballad, “Whatever That Was.” Listen here.
Co-written by the two-time No. 1 hitmaker with Michael Tyler, Ray Fulcher, and Matt Dragstrem, “Whatever That Was” finds Birge stuck on a memory, and yearning for a feeling lost long ago. Bittersweet lyrics capture the swirl of thoughts rushing through the Austin native’s mind, as he plays back a time of vivid experience – trying to recapture what made it so special.
Also produced by Dragstrem, the heady emotional stunner takes Birge’s Texas vocal to the edges of Country and Alt-Rock, searching for an answer. Dark, dusky guitars and moody synth come alive beneath a thunder clap of drums and distortion, but a fading hint of perfection is all time left behind.
“I wrote 'Whatever That Was' in the living room of my house on acoustic guitar with a couple of my best friends, Michael Tyler and Ray Fulcher,” Birge shares. “The title came out in conversation, and we all felt like this was something you can picture but also a feeling you can’t put your finger on. We wanted to capture a coming-of-age story with vignettes of first love, breaking rules and trying to cope with a first heartbreak. Eventually we called Matt Dragstrem to help bring the song to life and get it across the finish line. The result is something I hope every listener can relate to.”
With a season of high-profile milestones on tap, “Whatever That Was” follows another career highlight, after Birge teamed with superstar Luke Bryan for “Ride, Ride, Ride” in March. A resilient anthem of rural toughness, the empowering collaboration continues to surge up both the Country Aircheck/Mediabase and Billboard Country Airplay charts, becoming Birge’s fastest-rising Country Radio single to date.
Looking ahead, the electrifying live performer will stay on the road to finish out his headlining COWBOY SONGS TOUR, with dates scheduled across the Northeast through April 25 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Birge will also join Darius Rucker on the SONGS OF THE SUMMER TOUR 2026, and his jam packed summer continues on with a long list of festival and fair dates – further cementing his status as one of Country’s fastest-rising live acts.
